I'll put it into BYKI or ANKI together with the coffee info from the Emma's house in Portugal blog' and next time I'm there I'll be sure to impress!

Hi - I think I would be surprised finding ham in a cake!
Here's a list of some of the cakes you can find in Portugal. I know there are many more - especially the sweet pastries that I don't know all the names of. It can be useful then to learn the words for orange, lemon, apple etc so that you can ask for a flavour you like.

Bolo de nozes – walnut cake
Bolo de coco – coconut cake
Bolo de páscoa – easter cake
Bolo de mel – honey cake
Bolo de frutas – fruit cake
Bolo pobre – rotten cake
Bolo de cenoura – carrot cake

Tarte de amêndoa – almond tart
Tarte de maçã – apple tart
Tarte de laranja – orange tart
Queijadas – sweet cheese tarts

Sonhos – dreams – like a doughnut
Malasada – similar to a doughnut

Fatias douradas – golden slices bread dipped in milk, fried and then sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon

Pão-de-lo – sponge cake

Queques de Limão/Laranga – small cakes flavoured with lemon or orange

Do you have a listing of Bolos?

I ask because I'm rather fond of coffee, and nearly always order a bolo with my coffee when in Portugal.

However, the last time I was there, in Funchal, I bought a bolo by pointing at one that looked nice, only to discover it had ham in the middle.

Whilst this is perhaps innovative and maybe interesting, my partner is a vegetarian, and was, erm, somewhat surprised...

So, do you know where I might find a list of the sort of bolos one might find in Portuguese coffee shops, preferably in both English and Portuguese?
