Re: novels, I would just pick a novel you really enjoy in English and then see if it’s printed in Portuguese (check Fnac). Personally I love Steven King novels so I’m starting there.

Only the other week a visitor to our office noticed the Portuguese flag on my computer desktop. Turned out she is from Oporto and knew of a wonderful Portuguese run cafe very near to where I work. It’s a great idea to get bilingual books. You can try this with novels as well. Get one version in English and one in Portuguese. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you start to understand.
